Consumer:The use of castor oil is contraindicated in patients with dehydration or electrolyte imbalance. Castor oil is hydrolyzed to glycerol and ricinoleic acid within the small intestine. Ricinoleic acid acts on the small intestine to reduce the net absorption of fluid and electrolytes. This altered intestinal permeability caused by castor oil may produce dehydration and electrolyte imbalance.
